After more than 20 years of successfully guiding visitors on Mt Ruapehu, Adrift Tongariro is disappointed to advise that we are no longer permitted to offer our guided Mt Ruapehu Summit tour.

The Department of Conservation (DOC) has made the decision not to allow Adrift Tongariro to continue commercially guiding visitors to the summit of Mt Ruapehu.

We respect the importance of both visitor safety and the cultural significance of Mt Ruapehu. However, after more than two decades of safely guiding this experience, we are naturally very disappointed that we are no longer able to take visitors to the summit.

While we are deeply disappointed by this decision, we are currently working on an alternative guided Mt Ruapehu experience and look forward to sharing more details soon.

Worthy of a place on anyone’s bucket list. The volcanic crater of Mt Ruapehu and its milky blue waters are an impressive sight, making this a hike to remember. 

Run exclusively for you and your family or friends, private tours are more flexible. We guide all year, summer and winter, with snow up until the end of December. This is a fantastic snow experience using crampons and ice axes. Please note this is not a track and is less stable walking than on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing.

Terms and Conditions

Please note this is not a track and is less stable walking than on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. The terrain is uneven and steep in places. Safety regarding, weather, avalanche, ice and hypothermia are taken into consideration when securing our exact route for the day. A minimum of two people are required to offer this private tour.
